Since I wasn’t travelling outside of Göreme, Turkey, to experience the Cappadocian landscape, I thought the open air museum in town, could be a nice option. After a 1-hour visit, my opinion is, time is better spent strolling among the tuff stone formations around town, and hiking the nearby Gorkundere Valley and Sunset View Hill. Or putting effort into exploring valleys beyond Göreme. The only thing I didn’t see elsewhere, was the cave churches, which I didn’t find all that worthwhile. The frescoes of the Dark Church were nice enough. There are many churches, well, more like tiny chapels. Unless you are very interested, there’s no need to pop into them all. There’s lots of visitors, meaning lines for entering almost every church.
Göreme Open Air Museum is 1.2 kilometres from the centre of town, and an easy walk. Once there, you have to pass the souvenir and food stalls, to find the ticket office.
