Fields of Cotton

experience cotton fields on roadtrip georgia usa

On our road trip through the southern part of the US, I was hoping I would get to see some cotton fields in bloom. Finding out where to do this on the route we had mapped out, proved not to be the easiest. Luckily I stumbled upon a post on it at Sweet Southern Days saying that they would always run into fields on their trip back to Tallahassee, Florida, in the area of Moultrie, Omega and Norman Park, Georgia. Since we were going from Savannah, Georgia, to aforementioned Tallahassee, where we would spend the night, before continuing to New Orleans, Louisiana, we figured this would be the perfect spot. Only thing we needed to do was change our route from driving the highways via Jacksonville, Florida, to taking the backroads, crossing through the inland of Georgia. This also sounded a lot more exciting than doing the Interstates, and was not going to add too much extra time to our planned schedule. After landing on what to do, now we only had to hope harvesting was not over and done with.

The first sign of us getting close to our goal, was something white dotting the road. It took a while before we eagerly realised it was cotton that had fallen off trucks. Then smaller patches of cotton fields started appearing. With not finding a good place to pull over, we had to wait until we came upon this huge farm. Looked like a lot had been harvested already, bundled up like hay, but there were still big fields left for us to enjoy. By enjoying I mean getting the chance to have a closer look at something a person from Arctic Norway has never seen before in its natural form. Or at least I thought so. Because the surprise is, what comes out of those round green pods feels the same as what you buy in the store. Touching it, it appears like it is not processed in any way. Good job you cotton ball producers! It was so unexpected. Did not see that coming at all! Lesson learned, in a good way 🙂
