khreshchatyk street kiev ukraine

Khreshchatyk is the main street of Kyiv, Ukraine, and Independence Square (Maidan Nezalezhnosti) is the main square. The latter has been the place for momentous events in the country’s history. The street isn’t very long, and the square isn’t very big, but in this area you will find the highest concentration of shops, restaurants, and cafes. All mostly housed in Soviet era buildings. Some not very well branded, so you won’t know that there are shopping malls inside. It pays to be nosy 🙂 In-between the more mundane looking constructions, you’ll find some exciting architecture, but I’d say this is more about shopping than sightseeing.

Looking for a local SIM card? Then you should head for the Kyivstar store on Khreshchatyk. Facing south, it will be on the left side of the street. Same side as the Independence Square, and on the block adjacent to the square. Met a welcoming, English speaking guy, who fixed everything for me. When I left the store, it was business as usual.
