Soviet Survivor

ukraine hotel kiev kyiv

When I was looking for a place to stay in Kyiv, Ukraine, I was warned I might end up in an old hotel stemming from the Soviet Union era. And sure enough, I did. When the taxi pulled up in front of the building, I felt like a Lilliputian, looking up at the mammoth. Built in 1961, it was the first high-rise in the city. The lobby looks like a poor man’s Gringotts. You can imagine it being opulent way back when. The hallways are quite dark and quiet, and the rooms are from another time period. If you can look past this, you’ll get super central accommodation, just off Independence Square (Maidan Nezalezhnosti), and the main street, Khreshchatyk, at a fairly cheap price.
