Oslo Off the Beaten Track

tips on what to do outside oslo city centre walk hike lake norway

If you’re tired of big city activities, and want something different, this might be it. A walk along the shores of Østensjøvannet. Quite the local experience, I would say, as the lake sits outside the Oslo city centre, in the suburbs. The recreational area’s 4.5 km well-maintained, wide paths are used by residents of the surrounding neighbourhoods all year round. Whether it is walking, on bicycles or with trainers on. The place is also very popular with bird spotting photographers. They say around 200 different species have been seen here. Birds that is, not photographers 😀 The area is home to many types of insects, amphibians and rare plants, sheep, horses and the likes. As this nature reserve is a short walk from my flat, in periodes I use it quite regularly. I like it for the flat running terrain, one massive hill only, the wildlife, the views. It features benches, a playground, and a very nice observation hide too.

Now getting here is not the most straight forward thing. If you have a car, the only problem is the small parking lot can fill up quickly. Public transportation wise the best option is bus. Bogerudmyra is the name of the most convenient bus stop. Check the time tables as this service don’t run frequently. The metro is an option, but it will be a fairly long walk from any of the metro stations nearby, through residential areas.
