Who would have thought toilets would be the rave? In Senja, Arctic Norway, they are. First there was one, Milliondassen, the Million (Kroner) Crapper. Then came Gulldassen, the Golden Crapper, Naustdassen, the Boathouse Crapper, and now we’re apparently getting a fourth, Sølvdassen, the Silver Crapper. Now I need to explain that northerners are well known for their juicy language. Dassen = crapper, and it is far from the worst I have heard, or said 😀 The public restrooms have become tourist attractions in themselves, but they are also placed at spots with amazing views and scenery, so well worth your time.
Milliondassen is located at Tungeneset, and Gulldassen sits at Ersfjorstranda. Both can be reached by taking the ring road. Naustdassen you will find in Mefjordvær, which will mean a short detour from the ring road. Sølvdassen will aptly be built at the same spot as Gulldassen. The drive from Silsand, the main village on the island, will be about 1-1.5 hours.
There are more unique toilets along the Norwegian Scenic Routes.
And one more thing, use them! Outhouses are few and far between in remote places. We are experiencing visitors who suddenly need one, can’t find one, and end up using whatever, like the road they’re travelling on, or someone’s garden / land.
