VIDEO: Does It Get More Idyllic Than This?

roisheim boutique hotel galdhopiggen mountain boverdalen norway

If you are looking to explore the Jotunheimen mountain area, which includes Norway‘s and Northern Europe’s highest peak, Galdhøpiggen at 2,469 masl, you need to include a stay at this magnificent place. Located in Bøverdalen, Røisheim, consisting of 14 protected houses in a farmyard, is a coaching inn from 1858, that has been turned into a boutique hotel. Oozing Norwegian cultural history both inside and out, the atmosphere is amazing. You are bound to get an unforgettable experience. Like, do you fancy sleeping in a traditional Norwegian store house on pillars? Or stay in Jenteburet (the Girls’ Cottage), like me, and get a traditional four-poster bed, and a wooden bath tub? Boy, did I enjoy the tub after a long day of brainwork. There are rooms with fireplaces, rooms with a more modern looking interior design, and a room the Queen stays in when visiting. In addition to sleeping accommodations the tar painted buildings house a fireplace room, a library, a chapel, rooms for conduction workshops, and a (temporary?) gallery hosting a cheeky exhibition. Not only is Røisheim a place of enjoyment for the eyes, it’s heaven for the palate as well. On arrival we were served a hearty soup, on departure we were sent off with a solid lunch. In between, a traditional Norwegian breakfast buffet with lukewarm cinnamon buns, had 5 of them one day :D, and a 4-course dinner (in reality 5) at 07:30 pm – when you hear the bell, you know it’s time. All the meals are traditional Norwegian dishes, with an updated twist, and produce locally sourced. Amidst stuffing our faces, and wrecking our brains (we were there for work), we found time for a short hike, on which we were happily rewarded with a view of Galdhøpiggen.

We rented cars in Oslo, and drove all the way up. Estimated to take about 4.5 hours, I think it took closer to 6.5 hours, including stopping for food, toilet breaks, and the likes. The hotel sits a 15 minutes drive from Lom. You should be able to get to Lom on public transportation. It might not be straight forward, but it should be doable. Remember to stop by the bakery in Lom, lots of mouthwatering goods!
