Upper and Lower Barrakka Gardens

lower barrakka gardens valletta malta

The first time I was in Valletta, Malta, I didn’t visit. I can’t even remember hearing about them back then. When I came across Upper Barrakka Gardens during trip planning this time around, I thought it looked nice, so decided to give it a shot. Good or bad decision? Well… You’re not crazy to miss out…on either. The upper one is the most “famous” one, but the lower one I liked the most. The latter I came across just because that was the way my wander though town took me. Lower Barrakka Gardens has a nice and quiet vibe, compared to Upper Barrakka Gardens, which is a lot busier, maybe because that’s the one people have heard about, and it is closer to the city centre. Both are relatively small, public gardens with monuments and memorials, striking arches, and superb views of Grand Harbour, and Three Cities, on the other side of the bay. The gardens sit on top of the city walls, and are in a way part of the fortification. You can take the Barrakka Lift from Upper Barrakka Gardens down to…somewhere 😀 – I didn’t check it out.
