Pub Food in the Channel Islands

pub food pickled pig restaurant st peter port guernsey

After my first meat pie experience in New Zealand, I’ve always been on the hunt for a good pie when visiting England. Since there is an undeniable connection between the Channel Islands and Great Britain, I figured I’d see if I could quench my meat pie thirst while visiting Jersey and Guernsey. The quest brought me into a few pubs, and this is how it went.

Cock & Bottle

Cock & Bottle located on the Royal Square, just off the main street, in St. Helier, Jersey, was my first stop. Seemed to be quite popular, but my coq au vin pie lacked a lot in flavour. Lesson learned, always go for steak and ale. Nice inside, I was sat next to a fire place. Outside seating facing square most likely perfect in the summer time, but not tempting in pouring rain in October.

The Pickled Pig

The Pickled Pig in St. Peter Port, Guernsey, is actually a hotel restaurant. One of the nicer ones I’ve been to. It is at the Duke of Normandie hotel, which is up a hill, a little off the main street. Contrary to the pie mention above, this steak and ale pie (featured photo) has the rich taste I like, just would have wanted more crust. The place is kinda quirky, kinda cool looking.

The Thomas de la Rue

When The Thomas de la Rue came along, I was a bit over trying pies, so for my last meal in St. Peter Port, Guernsey, I went for a steak sandwich, accompanied by deep-fried onions, a salsa like thing (not spicy), and fries. Great last supper! Interior wise not very exciting, what I associate with very traditional pub. On the main street, so easy to spot. Also offers Channel Islands’ brewed Liberation Ale, for those who are into that 🙂
