Wong’s Restaurant

This Chinese restaurant was the Finnsnes area’s first meeting with foreign cuisine, if you disregard hamburgers, pizza and the likes 🙂 It has been around for ages, since I was in high school, but it feels like popularity has increased in recent years. People are travelling more, dining out more, and the presence, and popularity, of Asian restaurants in town has gone up. Basically, times have changed. Wong’s was opened by a Chinese couple, who already owned a successful restaurant in Tromsø. After many years they decided to sell, and I guess with that one can assume cooking knowledge left along with them. Or… I can’t say I noticed a huge change… Could be my visits have become a lot less frequent these past few years, as more eateries have emerged. Recently I’ve found myself wanting something besides Thai food, so I returned. My go-to duck dish was gone. The replacement was not the greatest. My friend’s deep-fried beef strips looked interesting, thereby my new favourite was appointed, tasted real good! Sometimes it pays to venture into new things 😀 I guess my advice for this place is choose the right dish…, which can be hard when you’re a visitor, and not a local 🙂 To help you out a wee bit, I’ll do my best to list my experiences as I go:

  • Spring rolls – good! Despite pale-looking 😀 However do not expect Vietnamese or Thai spring rolls.
  • Creme caramel – fair. It says homemade. Might be industrial (home)made.
  • King cha pau duck – will not go for again. Overcooked, thinly sliced meat.
  • Sam-Boj-Chup chicken – will not go for again. Too mild in taste IMO. Could be the sauce is suppose to be like that.
  • Deep-fried beef strips with aromatic spices (feat. image) – good! Would have been perfect with richer sauce. Huge portion.
  • Yu hong beef – good…? This I used to always choose way back when, in the early 90’s. Memories 😀 Need to re-try.
  • Beef teryaki – good! This is the perfect version of the Deep-fried beef strips with aromatic spices dish 🙂
  • Entrecote a la Wong – good… A must is you like entrecote. Now I know for sure I don’t like that cut of meat.

PS! I hear the international dishes they serve, are good too.
