Beaches of San Juan

best beach san juan puerto rico

During my days in San Juan, Puerto Rico, I got to have a look at the beaches the city has to offer. Here’s my two cents on Escambron, Ocean Park and Condado.

Escambron

This was my favourite. Initially I went there to snorkel. But when I saw the setup, I just wasn’t tempted. It looked like you were suppose to follow a floating rope stretching across the bay. I’m imagining it would be a cramped experience with several people going at it at the same time. Heading back was when I fell in love. There was a surf competition going on. Spectators had based themselves along the walkway, barbecuing, drinks, playing music. Relaxed, local, weekend vibe. A real treat. And they didn’t mind me hanging out for a bit 🙂 Due to the competition, I didn’t go down to the sands themselves, but it looked nice, dotted with palm trees.

Ocean Park

This beach looked like a neighbourhood beach. It’s across the road from a residential area, in which my guesthouse accommodation was located. At the easternmost section, the place was totally deserted. Could be the tide was in, the weather was not great, it was late in the day. If you’re wanting a local atmosphere, you might wanna check it out.

Coqui del Mar was the guesthouse I stayed at. Great place, a block away from the beach. Seems like they’ve changed their profile since then.

Condado

From where I was standing, at the easternmost section of the stretch of sand, this one looked like a to be a busy one. Hotels lined up at the back. Umbrellas, sunbeds, people. Very different from Ocean Park. I have a feeling this is a place tourists flock to (see below), so if not your cup of tea, stay away.

I also stayed at a hotel in this part of town, and walking the streets, the area seemed to be popular with visitors. Hotels, cafes, stores. Not very nice looking though. Could have improved since then.
