San Francisco Bread Bowl

bread bowl restaurant oslo norway

This small restaurant in Oslo, Norway, I can’t make up my mind regarding. Why? On the positive side, it is a cool concept, serving stew in a bowl made out of bread. The clam chowder I went for was good tasting, and the lemonade excellent. The negative: The chowder was more or less just a thick, creamy, no-chunks soup. I encountered a few bits of something only. Making it kind of boring. The price is steep, for what you get, even the largest (normal) bowl is not particularly sizeable, and I’m not a big eater. I chose to have garlic butter added to the lid, and inside the bowl, if I remember correctly. Really didn’t make any difference. If I go back, I’ll be looking towards the lunch options instead, like open aioli chicken sandwich, and their take on Toast Skagen. Could perhaps also do a baby bowl (size) as midday meal. For visitors, this might be a good opportunity to taste the traditional Norwegian dish, lapskaus, beef stew with root vegetables. I’m just left wondering, how much bread are wasted…?

San Francisco Bread Bowl is located in the Frogner neighbourhood, but not far from the city centre. Street car will take you there, unless you walk.

  1. Aha! I have been by this place and often wondered whether it was any good (I have been to San Francisco a few times and have enjoyed their chowder bowls back in the day) so I was very interested to read your post. I am thinking maybe I will just keep walking by and wondering. (I also like texture in my clam chowder.) Thanks for the info!

    1. I might go back for lunch (won’t be rushing), to try some of the other stuff. Lunch prices are more agreeable. But, yeah, you won’t miss out on anything invaluable 🙂

Love to hear your comment :)
