Into the Catacombs

is st pauls catacombs rabat malta worth it

Since I didn’t recall much from St. Paul’s Catacombs in Rabat, Malta, I figured I might as well re-do, seeing that I already was in town. Approaching, nothing looked familiar. Apparently they have made some changes, the ticket office and museum / exhibition appeared to be of recent date. Upon exiting the building you find yourself at an open space with walkways leading you from one small hut to another. Each hut sit on top of an entrance to the catacombs, giving you access to a small portion of the vast system. There are many huts. Too many. It gets boring in the end. It is all the same, it feels like. There are really not much to see underground. It is cramped, ceiling is low, narrow walkways, dug out pits, and walls with window like openings. And a panic button 😀 Scattered among the entrance huts are other huts, information huts, for the ones looking to dive in.

St. Agatha’s Catacombs

This time St. Agatha’s Catacombs were closed. What I recall from my previous visit, is that it was even less to see here than at St. Paul’s Catacombs. The entrance is placed in the middle of an open courtyard. Underground there were two small rooms, the inner one featuring an altar. A map showed how huge it in fact is, which made me glad it was just a small portion of the complex system that was open to the public. Wouldn’t wanna get lost down there… Above ground, there is a church, and some other buildings 🙂
