Day Trip to Cascais from Lisbon

how to visit cascais day trip lisbon portugal

Initially Cascais wasn’t on my to-do list for this Portugal trip, but since I was travelling via it to get to Cape Roca, I decided to spend a couple of hours, after all, already here. From the bus terminal it is a 5 minute walk until you reach the palm tree lined main street taking you down to the harbour, beach, and main square. At first glance Cascais doesn’t appear big, but after digging into it, you realise there is a lot more than meets the eye. You have the old town, with narrow streets, plenty of restaurants, and cool street art, that being murals painted on the streets, not buildings. The area that stretches east from beautiful Palacete Seixas, at the pier, all the way to Estoril, offers beach alternatives to the one in town. Was planning on strolling along the promenade, and hopping on the train in Estoril, when going back to Lisbon, but it started raining… What I did get to do, was the area west of town, walking out to Boca do Inferno, about 20 minutes away. The shoreline with the huge waves crashing in, is really, really cool. You can walk out onto the rugged cliffs, might need a hand to climb the rocks, but be careful. Wouldn’t surprise me if some tourist got swept out by the waves. On my way back to the train station, I discovered pedestrian side streets spreading out from the main street, with shops and restaurants, so, yeah, more than meets the eye 🙂

I got on the train at Rossio train station in Lisbon. Not a lot of people, and easy to understand where to go. The ride is 40 minutes, along the coast. The train station in Cascais is a bit off in relation to the town centre, but next to the shopping mall with the bus terminal.
