Adorable All the Way

sightseeing what to see do roros norway

I love Røros! No doubt about that. The colourful wooden houses lining the narrow streets of this old copper mining town, feels like movie set building facades, until you realize there are homes and businesses inside the beautiful “props”. After snowfall it gets even more idyllic. Lucky me then, the snow came down the night after my arrival. Not so lucky me, it was freezing the day after. Time to pull out the long johns. It’s worth noting that the coldest it has been in Røros is –50,4 °C, a record set in 1914. In other words, bring warm clothes if you visit in the winter! Despite the sometimes biting cold, and on occasions blowing snow, during which I could see nothing but white around me, I get why Bergstaden, which Røros also is referred to, pointing to the mining past, receives a million visitors a year, and was put on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. If you’re prone to do more than just stroll the streets looking in awe, there are remnants of the copper mining era to explore, like mines, the smeltery, and the hills of slag. The latter might be hard to get a good look at in winter, but possible to scale during other times of the year, providing an elevated view of the small town.

PS! Had planned to visit Røros Church, as the photos I had seen of the inside, appealed to me. Turned out it is open Saturdays only in winter, and has varying opening hours during the rest of the year. Check beforehand!

Trivia: The Norwegian Netflix series “Hjem til jul” (Home for Christmas) has shot many outdoor scenes here. By the way, an outstanding show. I’m not much of a chick flick person, but I found myself laughing out loud, all alone 😀

    1. Thank you! I really, really liked it! If there is anything positive to COVID, it has made Norwegians vacation in their own country, and discover the beauty we have, but don’t pay much attention, myself very much included 🙂

Love to hear your comment :)
