The Gateway to Arctic Senja

what to see do finnsnes gateway senja northern norway arctic

Let’s just put it out there straight away, Finnsnes is not particularly exciting. However this is the only overland access to Senja. So if you don’t want to do the car ferries over the summer season, or the passenger express ferries that run year round, you will have to pass through this small Arctic town. The size of the place can be illustrated by this story: I was at work, at a travel agency. Hurtigruten had docked. Two foreign tourists entered. All visitors for some reason confused the travel agency with a tourist information office. Question: Where is the town centre? My answer, with a smile: This is it… Reaction: Slight confusion, like they didn’t belive me 😀 Basically, when you’ve walked the main street up from the harbour, passed the town square, and arrive at the pond outside city hall, you’ve seen it all. It’ll take you five minutes or so 🙂 Even though it is quite compact, you’ll get all your needs covered, like at any other regional hub. Once here it might be a good idea to stock up on things, as grocery stores are few and far between on the island, and other shops are more or less non-existent.
