Donkey Island & the Blue Lagoon

how to visit donkey island blue lagoon cesme

When I was in Cesme, Turkey, in the ’90s, we went on a boat tour including Donkey Island and the Blue Lagoon. Re-visiting the area last fall, to my surprise, I was told Donkey Island still exists. A quick Google search, and I could see it has changed a bit. Now it looks like the donkeys are kept inside enclosures, and have shelters, instead of roaming the island freely, as was the case all those years ago. We went ashore, walked among them, petted them, and fed them bits of watermelon. Could be changes had to be made due to a growing population. After all, it all started with just a few animals being left there.

I can’t remember the Blue Lagoon being any different from other blue lagoons around the world 🙂

I see the Blue Lagoon is now referred to as Blue Bay. Donkey Island is also known as Esek, Kara, and Goni Island.
