Before leaving for my day trip to Gamlebyen in Fredrikstad, Norway, I got two lunch spot recommendations from a friend, a local. Mormors Cafe and Cafe Magenta. Since the former was full, I headed towards the latter, located on the outskirts of the old town. The neighbourhood is small, so not a long walk. The restaurant sits inside what originally was a guardhouse turned prison (for slaves…), from the 1700s. It has had many uses throughout the years. Now it is a cafe, art gallery, and concert venue. A looker both inside and out. Very popular, but I found a spot. Food wise, I should have gone with one of the delightfully looking sandwiches I saw, and not the Club Sandwich I chose, because it was not impressive. Just switching out the bread, with what I noticed the open face sandwiches had as base, would have made a huge difference. For drinks, soda from old town based brewery.
